On the last day of February I started the 2009 garden. There are a few little lettuces, mountain spinach, cilantro, green onions, some stunted yellow onions, and some hearty artichoke sprouts (re-sprouted more vigorously after deer munched them), in addition to the baby strawberries and other perennials just resprouting.
Today I planted some spinach, pole beans, sugar peas, bush beans, broccoli, kale, and carrots. The artichokes came back pretty strong and in clumps of up to five, so I split and transplanted them.
Tomorrow I'll aim for some turnips, lettuce, and another type of spinach. Probably should start the tomato, peppers, and eggplant soon, at least by solstice. Last year I started them in mid Feb, prob too early.
Finance
I roughly estimated about $250 on seeds last year. Maybe another $150 on plants. And guess I grew about $2,000 in veggies. Throw in another $300 for electricity, and my free labor. Still a decent bounty. I'll pin these #s down in more detail later.
This year I am $2.79, no water use.
